After a strong 2014, Ava Catanzarite finished the year with the top ranking in the Girls’ 12 age division. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., she is involved in tennis in a variety of ways. She competed in numerous tournaments throughout the year, in both singles and doubles, winning five of them. She also competed on the Zonal team.

Aside from the tournament wins and No. 1 ranking, most notable about Catanzarite is her sportsmanship and the amount of integrity she brings to the game. When asked if she has any specific superstitions or rituals, her response was quick.
“It’s not really a superstition as much as a best practice, but I always walk over to shake the on-court referee’s hand after a tournament match,” she said. “They have a tough job and I want to be sure to thank them appropriately. A handshake goes a long way.”
