University of Pennsylvania’s Kana Daniel is fighting her way to the top.
As the only Ivy League player in this year’s ITA singles rankings, Daniel defeated Aldila Sutjiai on Wednesday morning. Sutjiai is ranked No. 22 in the nation.
In a back–and–forth match against the senior from University of Kentucky, the Penn senior rose to victory, 7-5, 6-3. She advances on to face No. 5 Blair Shankle of Baylor on Thursday.
It was a strong way to begin the NCAAs for Daniel, who put together an impressive singles record of 19-11 throughout 2017. Daniel also received the Northeast’s ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award earlier this year.
A Penn women’s player hadn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2011.
