Pittsburgh native Alison Riske is starting 2019 in a big way.
Riske, ranked No. 62 in the world entering last week, made an impressive run at the Shenzhen Open in China, advancing to the finals before losing a tight match to No. 1-seed Arnya Sabalenka.
With the strong showing, she’ll crack the WTA Top-50 this week as the Australian Open inches closer.
Riske started the tournament with a win over No. 3-seeded Wang Qiang then took down Evgeniya Rodina, Sorana Cîrstea and Vera Zvonareva to reach the final. She played well in the final, winning the first set and then dropping a second-set tiebreak.
was making her third appearance in the final at Shenzhen.
Riske is from the South Hills of Pittsburgh Pa. and grew up playing in USTA Tournaments around the country.
