There is something magical in that Lancaster County air for Dover Delaware native Madison Brengle.
The Koser Jewelers $60,000 Challenge was hosted in Landisville, Pa. in mid-August, and first-seeded Madison Brengle became the first-ever No. 1 seed to win the tournament, while also becoming the first back-to-back winner of the event.
This title did not come easy, though.
After a 6-4 first set win, Brengle could not close out second-seeded Lin Zhu in the second set, as her 5-1 lead soon became a 5-5 battle. Brengle would then go on to win the next two games for her third Landisville title.
She enjoyed success in front of the fans in Landisville. This year’s title marks her second in a row and third in the past decade with her first coming back in 2013. She said the atmosphere is what keeps bringing her back to Lancaster.
The doubles final did not disappoint either as a third set tiebreaker had to determine the champion. After dropping the first set, the USA tandem of Vania King and Claire Liu stormed back for a 4-6, 6-2 [10-5] victory over USA’s Hayley Carter and Jamie Loeb.
