Competing in the US Open is a dream for many competitive tennis players, and for the seventh straight year, tennis players along the east coast will have that chance.
The 2016 US Open National Playoffs Middle States Sectional Qualifying Tournament is set to kick off at Mercer County Park in New Jersey next month, running from July 18-21. The event includes men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
The winners of each flight will earn a spot in the US Open National Playoffs Championships in their respective division in New Haven, Conn. From there, the winner of the Mixed Doubles National Championship will earn a wildcard entry into the main draw of the 2016 US Open Championships. The winner of the men’s and women’s singles and doubles national championships, meanwhile, will receive an entry into the qualifying tournament at the 2016 US Open Championships in New York.
Thirteen of the 17 USTA sections hold an annual qualifying tournament. These championships began in 2010, granting anyone older than 14 a fair shot at securing a spot in the US Open, one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. Participants must be a current USTA member and are permitted to compete in one Sectional Qualifying tournament during a calendar year in each division.
